givens2007lectureNew episodes of the Maxwell Institute Podcast are on the way. In the meantime, this episode features the recording of Terryl L. Givens’s 2009 Laura F. Willes Book of Mormon lecture, “Joseph Smith’s American Bible: Radicalizing the Familiar.” The lecture was based on his research for The Book of Mormon: A Very Short Introduction (New York: Oxford University Press, 2009), Givens’s contribution to Oxford’s Very Short Introduction series. In his lecture, Givens explored four motifs from the Book of Mormon introduced in the visionary experiences of Lehi (in 1 Nephi): revelation, Christology, Zion, and scripture. You can read a full transcript of the lecture here or watch a filmed version on the MI’s YouTube channel. Givens is a professor of literature and religion at the University of Richmond in Virginia. He’s published a number of important books in Mormon studies including By the Hand of Mormon and People of Paradox. His forthcoming publications include the Oxford Handbook of Mormonism (coedited with Philip Barlow) and a two-volume history of Mormon theology to be published by Oxford University Press this October. He and his wife Fiona (both former guests on the MIPodcast) live in Montpelier, Virginia.
