Many Latter-day Saints find it difficult to appreciate the archaic King James language of the New Testament. The gospel writers presented their witnesses to an ancient audience whose customs are unfamiliar to readers today. Biblical scholarship has come a long way in clarifying cultural and historical backgrounds of scripture but most Mormons haven’t taken advantage of such work. Few Mormons, after all, pursue higher education in biblical studies.
Julie M. Smith runs counter to this trend. She’s a Latter-day Saint with a master’s degree in biblical studies who recently published Search, Ponder, and Pray: A Guide to the Gospels. She joins us in this episode of the Maxwell Institute Podcast to discuss ways enrich Latter-day Saint study of the New Testament Gospels.
